Offerings

I design, build, and maintain web sites, and have been doing this since 1996. I can design and build a web site for you, host it, and serve as webmaster, maintaining it as needed -- you choose the services you need. I have extensive experience with deploying e-commerce on a web site, and can implement that on your site if desired . I am a hard-core software engineer and can easily handle the more complex requirements of business-related web sites.

In designing a web site, I place major emphasis on these aspects:

  • determining the real objectives of the site,
  • establishing and maintaining a "clean site",
  • ensuring that the intended audience finds the site, and
  • satisfying the user's needs with the site

This includes such things as "speed-of-loading" issues as well as browser compatibility ones -- the site should load quickly for all users with the browsers they are likely to be using. Everything on the site must work -- no broken links, no images that aren't found, ... I can maintain your site, get money flowing into your web site, ensuring that updates are done correctly and smoothly, enhance your ranking in search engines, manage your email accounts, track your site's visitors, and attend to the various aspects of a well-maintained web site.

The customer must be able to find the site, typically via a search engine, such as Yahoo, Excite, or Alta Vista. To achieve a high ranking with these search engines, the site must be designed appropriately. I have extensive experience and tools to use with this and can get your site rated highly in the search engines, ensuring that more potential customers find your site. Additionally I have considerable experience in effective advertising of web sites -- how to increase the traffic to your site in an economical manner.

The user must be able to glean the information desired on a visit in a clear and efficient manner, be able to interact with the site in a smooth and secure fashion, and leave the site with a positive impression of the experience. And of course the web site's objectives should be met during this interaction, whether it is selling a product, establishing a potential customer contact, or just providing information to the user.

Current Web Sites

I maintain and develop these web sites below and serve as the webmaster for them:

  • Undercurrent (www.undercurrent.org) -- This is a large site (about 3500 pages) that I have been developing since January, 1998. It has been operational since May, 1998 and has extensive e-commerce facilities for taking subscription orders and online memberships, as well as a number of other technical features, e.g. forms, email lists, usage tracking. I do all the technical work and most of the marketing, design and development as well, working with the publisher on the latter. We do regular updates of the content as well as a monthly emailing to our list (about 10,0000). I devote most of my work time to this site and will continue to develop and support it in the future. Contact publisher@undercurrent.org for references.
  • Dive Discovery (www.divediscovery.com) -- I designed, built and maintain this site (redo from a previous version)
  • Africa Discovery (www.africa-discovery.com) -- I designed, built and maintain this website.
  • Kararu (www.kararu.com) -- I designed, built and maintain this website.
  • Kubu Lodge (www.KubuLodge.com) -- a web site for a remote jungle lodge in Sumatra.
  • House In Bali (www.HouseInBali.com) -- a web site for some vacation rental houses in Bali.
  • Mind and Heart (www.Mind-And-Heart.com) -- I maintain and promote (but did not build) this web site for a psychiatrist in California.
  • Sea Below (www.SeaBelow.com) -- my own (much neglected ;-) web site with my business offerings, including web site development and underwater photography.

Past Web Sites

These are websites I previously developed or did extensive work on

  • The Coral Reef Alliance (aka CORAL) (www.coral.org)-- This is another large site (about 1000 pages) that I (7/22/99) took over. I have done extensive clean-up of the site, added e-commerce capabilities, enhanced its position in search engines, and added more hard functionality to the site, including integration with databases. Contact JKraus@coral.org for references.
  • Maya Ha Resort (www.MayaHaResort.com) -- This is a small site I did. The site has an email sign-up list as well as an information request form. Contact John@MayaHaResort.com for references.

Professional Experience

I worked as a Senior Software Engineer with Schlumberger Oilfield Services from 1978 -- 1998. There I developed complex applications and systems used in the interpretation of oilfield data. My last two years there I developed web-based applications in Java, also using CGI scripts (Perl, shell, and C), HTML, CORBA, and Oracle. Contact abusalbi@slb.com for references.

Prior to my work at Schlumberger, I did extensive scientific software development for IBM (9 years), Rice University (4 years), Laval University (1 year), Instituto de Investigaciones Pesqueras (Barcelona, Spain), and the University of Pennsylvania. I also consulted with a number of companies in the Houston area in developing software.
